This is less a 'study guide' and more of a 'book of practice problems'. Both useful things, but they serve different purposes. This book does talk about some strategies for taking the FE in the very beginning, but more along the lines of why questions are asked certain way, and less about test taking strategies. Instead, the bulk of it is practice problems from past FE exams, both for diagnostic test sections and for learning how to solve the problem with step-by-step solutions.
But this is still the best FE prep book on the market right now. I'll lay them out here: There is no 'passing' score for the FE. Instead, they take all the scores from the same test on that day, scale them using the unmarked 'bench marking' problems, and place the scores on the standard distribution.
Practice spotting the keyword you need to search in the Handbook PDF they provide on the test. That way you can simply look up the information you need right off the bat and see how to do the problem.
You'll still need a basic competency in solving that particular type of engineering problem - the FE handbook doesn't walk you through the formulas application step-by-step - but you don't need to memorize the formulas. That is it for strategy, really. Top critical review.
Do not get this book, it is based off the old exam format 8-hours, 4-General and 4-Specific this is not the way the exam is done anymore now it is just 6 hour of degree specific question.
Also the questions in this book are way harder and more convoluted than the exam - especially the math, and stats questions. Really just take the NCEES practice exam for your discipline that was way better than studying this book.

You will have the option of taking a discipline specific exam, or the non-disciple specific exam. Before you start studying, be sure to view the NCEES handbook and see which topics will be covered in your exam. This is great, because as opposed to the old version of the exam, you will only have to review a few sections of this book.
Given the new format, you will find that a lot of the information about study plans and such is outdated. It is best to make a list of the sections you need to review, and plan your own schedule.
I would also suggest renting the discipline specific prep book for your exam, if available. I find that this book tends to over complicate some of the questions, and focuses too much on things I didn't really see on the exam. For example, you could spend a week reviewing the entire math section of this book, and end up only seeing two or three easy math problems on the exam.
If you focus on the right things, then this book is great, but don't get caught up in it's size. To all the Environmental Engineers out there, review the Thermodynamics section! Do it like 3 times. You will thank me later. I used this manual as directed for the 3 month preparation, and passed on my first try.
FE Review Manual - Linderburg 2nd Edition
And it was exhausting. I spent a LOT of time doing this, every single day. Rather than taking breaks, I would do the diagnostic test one day, then spend one day per section, then one day on the chapter test.
I studied MUCH more than everyone I knew that had taken the test, and the two friends I tested with both passed as well. I found that the material in this book was more involved and difficult than the actual test. However, I am glad that I over-studied, as I think it's definitely better to be over prepared I do know a couple of individuals that did NOT pass!
The test is by no means easy. I highly recommend using this as a study guide, but don't drown yourself in this book like I did. I also recommend a study aide that specifically helps you to use the manual. I borrowed one from a professor, and it showed me the easiest and most efficient search terms to find what I was looking for, which saved me time and flat out answered several questions on the exam.
I studied through most of this book in preparation for the mechanical FE exam. The review coverage was completely sufficient in most of the topics. Here's a breakdown of how well the book covered the topics on the exam.
Fluid mechanics - Good coverage Strengths - Good coverage Control Systems - No coverage Machine Design - No coverage Dynamics - Good coverage Heat Transfer - Some review, but not sufficient Thermodynamics - Moderately sufficient Economics - Good coverage Math - More review than neccesary In conclusion, this book is a really good place to start in preparation for the mechanical FE exam; however, I recommend further studying of thermodynamics, heat transfer, machine design and basic control system topics very basic than is offered by this book.
Good luck! I got this book about 2 to 3 months before taking the actual exam, and a few months after that I graduated with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I decided to take this exam in order to challenge myself and further my career. I am very glad I got this book, because like many people point out the actual exam is slightly easier than the problems presented in this book.
I spent about one to two days per section, and concentrated on the ones that had the biggest weight distributions that I wasn't as familiar with. I didn't push myself too hard, maybe studying the sections and doing practice problems for 2 to 3 hours a day.
Every couple of days I'd review past sections so I could recall what I learned. When exam day came, I was glad I went through the book as much as I did since some questions were word-by-word from the practice questions in this book, although asking for less challenging answers in order to shorten time spent per question.
